As instructors we should always be incorporating different size turns shapes into all levels we teach. Often we have students who are comfortable on all blue runs (except for moguls or crud) who desire to ski more of the mountain. This skier type will have a medium to long turn shape, and a fairly fast speed for all of their mountain skiing. They will not be able to accurately negotiate terrain changes or add/maintain speed control on steeper pitches. After identifying their movement needs we find out that they have an inefficient short turn or they don’t have a short turn at all. We have to show and develop the distinction between gliding and braking short turns, and give an explanation of how terrain, speed, and skier traffic contribute to the tactics of turn selection. Short Turns: BrakingLinked hockey stops in the fall line.Pivot slips in the fall line with a pole plant.Refine pivot slips with more angulation (tipping the feet & legs), and anticipation.Speiss turns (hop turns). Toned down to the level of your guests. Lift both skis at initiation – gradually decrease the hop.Short Turns: GlidingSmall wedge turns in the fall line w/ pole swing.Open parallel w/focus on an early weight transfer by tipping the inside ski towards the fall line (tipping the ankles).Begin pole swing prior to initiation to allow the body to move into the turn.Allow the center of mass to between turns to create a constant flow of movement.
