Navajo Lake is located in southwest Colorado and Northern New Mexico. The lake was constructed in 1962 and is 35 miles long with 125 miles of shoreline. The water from Navajo Lake is used by the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project, as well as for power plants, irrigation, municipal and industrial purposes. The shore line of the lake is sedimentary sandstone and a variety of shale's from 50 million years ago. The first humans in this area were the Ute and Navajo tribes during the 14th. century. Surrounding communities have ancient ruins that are well worth visiting while in the 4-corners area. The lake has 4 recreation areas. In Colorado there is the Navajo State Recreations area located in Arboles, CO at the confluence of the Upper San Juan River and Piedra River. This is my main boat launch when fishing the lake. This area is also known for large numbers of pike in the early summer. On the New Mexico side of Navajo Lake there are 3 campgrounds with hook ups; the Pine River Area, Simms Mesa area, and the San Juan River site.
Slab Crappie, Smallmouths bass and Northern Pike are some of the targeted fish on the lake.
Rainbow and brown trout and Kokanee salmon inhabit the deeper colder water of the lake. Bass, crappie, pike, channel catfish inhabit the shallower warmer waters of the lake. Navajo Lake boasts the Colorado State Record Smallmouth Bass and the New Mexico State Record Kokanee Salmon and Smallmouth Bass.
2 Anglers Max. on Lake Trips.
This nice catfish took a series 4 crawfish crank bait, sometimes you never know what you might catch!
Being a saltwater fishing guide, I love nothing better than putting clients on big fish, a carp on the fly is often just the ticket.
